Merthyr Tydfil: A gardener was caught looking after a cannabis factory. He had over 150 plants that could be worth up to £64,000. That’s a lot of green!

Police found Thoai Lo, 53, at a house in Dowlais. They executed a warrant on December 19. Inside, they discovered three growing rooms filled with plants.

The court heard there were lots of powerful lights and basic living spaces. The prosecutor mentioned the plants could yield between 4.3kg and 12.8kg. That’s a hefty amount!

Lo claimed he was homeless in Birmingham. He said some men offered him food and a place to stay. They brought him to Merthyr Tydfil and asked him to water the plants.

He also said these men threatened him if he tried to leave. The judge pointed out it was odd they picked someone with his background.

Lo, who has no fixed address, admitted to cannabis production. He had a similar conviction from Chester Crown Court before this incident.

His lawyer explained that Lo is a Vietnamese national. He had been living in Germany but returned to the UK and ended up homeless.

In the end, the judge sentenced him to 15 months in prison. He’ll serve half of that time in custody before being released on licence.
