The Vale of Glamorgan Council plans to cut litter bins and street cleaning while increasing parking fines. These changes aim to address a significant budget shortfall.

Vale of Glamorgan: The council is considering some big changes. They might reduce litter bins and street cleaning while ramping up parking fines. This is all part of a plan to save money.
They’re facing an £8 million budget gap. To tackle this, they’ve proposed a 6.9% increase in council tax. They’re also thinking about handing over leisure facilities to community groups.
Recently, they shared a report detailing these potential cuts. It mentions reducing litter bins by 25% and cutting back on waste management resources. This could save around £200,000 next year.
Residents are not happy about these proposals. Two petitions against the changes have already been started. Many feel these cuts will hurt the community.
Parking charges are also on the table. New fees for Barry Island and Penarth seafront are being discussed. The council hopes to generate over £500,000 from these changes.
They’re also looking at introducing a camera car for parking enforcement. This could save an additional £225,000. The council has been using a camera car since 2020.
In terms of transport, they’re reviewing services for adults and children. This could save around £80,000. They’re also planning to increase fees for the Greenlinks service, which helps those who can’t access public transport.
Lastly, they’re considering changes to their telecare service. This service helps older people live independently. A fee review could bring in an extra £20,000 for the council.
